Trani knew a strong trade activity during the Middle Ages thanks to its port.
The city has kept a good part of its medieval harbour district.
Its splendid Romanesque cathedral along the sea was built in the XIIth century, it is dedicated to Nicolas the Pilgrim. The close castle was built by Frederic II of Swabia (XIIIth).
