With Roman origin of which there remain the ruins of an amphitheatre, Lucera has an imposing fortress built by Frederic II of Swabia and then increased by the Angevins.
The perimeter of its ramparts is about 900m long.
The cathedral with the high Gothic naves was built by Charles II of Anjou, which by taking possession of the city imposed its authority by massacring thousands of Moslems who composed the majority of the population, originating from Sicily that Frederic II off-set in Lucera in the past.
