During the Roman empire, Astis Colonia or Asta Pompeia was a military camp.
Asti was an independent commune in the Middle Ages, then a possession of the dukes of Milan, capital of a duchy given in dowry to Valentine Visconti when she married the duke of Orleans, brother of Charles VI.
The French princes preserved it until 1529 when it was yielded to Charles Quint who then gave it to Savoy.
The city preserves medieval monuments like several towers and palates.
