Troia is a small town perched on a hill which was founded in 1017 by the Byzantines, first as a defensive fortress against Lombards.
It passed to the Normans hands in 1066 and was controlled for several centuries by monks who built in particular a astonishing small cathedral started at the end of the XIth century.
